After an uninspired winter and start to this season, the Los Angeles Dodgers are getting awfully close to reaching some heights that looked unattainable.
Such as the best record in baseball.
Perhaps the National League MVP award.
And even the top spot in USA TODAY Sports' power rankings.
The Dodgers continued a blazing-hot August from both a collective and individual perspective, winning four of six games last week while superstar Mookie Betts had a triumphant homecoming in Fenway Park, where he once called home before the Boston Red Sox gifted him to L.A. before the 2020 season.

Betts equaled his career high in home runs Sunday, slugging his 35th with 33 games left in the season. He had consecutive three-hit games in Boston and now leads the National League with a 1.018 OPS.
Yep, 41 points better than Ronald Acuña Jr.
The Braves star seemed to have MVP locked up - and with 59 steals to accompany his 28 homers and .977 OPS, might still be the favorite. But he has company in Betts and fellow Dodger Freddie Freeman, who set a franchise record with his 50th double Sunday and has a .998 OPS.
The Dodgers are now 80-49, up to No. 2 in our power rankings - and host the 84-44 Braves for four games beginning Thursday. While both clubs are locks to earn division titles and first-round byes, suddenly there's a lot more at stake just under the surface.
A look at this week's rankings:
1. Atlanta Braves (–)
- Reliever Pierce Johnson has given up one earned run in 13 outings since trade from Colorado.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers (+1)
- Win four more and they'd have an .862 winning percentage (25-4) in August.
3. Baltimore Orioles (-1)
- With Felix Bautista likely out for the year, DL Hall and John Means may loom large in September and beyond.
4. Tampa Bay Rays (+1)
- This team's resilience should bode well in the playoffs.
5. Houston Astros (+1)
- Justin Verlander tips his cap to Miguel Cabrera one more time.
6. Texas Rangers (-2)
- Just a hiccup, or something caught in their throat?
7. Seattle Mariners (-)
- As Royals leave town, A's come in. That's good livin'.
8. Milwaukee Brewers (+2)
- Eight-game win streak, .562 win percentage shows they're not merely "NL Central-good."
9. Philadelphia Phillies (-)
- Looking likely that their playoff run will start at home this year.
10. Toronto Blue Jays (-2)
- Mercifully, they're done with the Orioles after losing 10 of 13.
11. Boston Red Sox (-)
- Want hope for the future? Triston Casas, 23, has 21 home runs already.
12. Chicago Cubs (–)
- Crucial week for Cubs with seven games against Reds, Brewers.
13. Arizona Diamondbacks (+2)
- As we've said, all it takes is a good week-plus and you, too, can hold down an NL wild card spot.
14. Cincinnati Reds (+3)
- Elly De La Cruz's strikeout rate at 34.3%.
15. San Francisco Giants (-2)
- Casey Schmitt breaks 201-at-bat homerless drought.
16. Miami Marlins (-)
- They're 15-27 since optioning Eury Perez to keep his innings count down.
17. Minnesota Twins (-3)
- A nice series win against Rangers; now 30-34 against winning teams.
18. Cleveland Guardians (+2)
- Fourth team in two years to bid Noah Syndergaard farewell.
19. Los Angeles Angels (-1)
- Not seeing the logic where an organizational collapse and debilitating injury enhances Shohei Ohtani's chances of staying.
20. San Diego Padres (+1)
- If you haven't already, yeah, it's safe to ignore them.
21. New York Yankees (-2)
- Regardless of intent, hitting four batters in one game while playing out the string is a terrible look.
22. New York Mets (+1)
- Mets fans might want to savor these potentially last few weeks with Pete Alonso.
23. Washington Nationals (+1)
- Stone Garrett's broken leg ends quietly promising season (.801 OPS) for second-year outfielder.
24. Detroit Tigers (-2)
- Parker Meadows' grand debut a bright spot.
25. Pittsburgh Pirates (-)
- Paul Skenes not likely to pitch in majors this season.
26. St. Louis Cardinals (–)
- Outscored 22-3 as Phillies sweep them for first time ever at Citizens Bank Park.
27. Chicago White Sox (–)
- If you're gonna blow it up, maybe you ought not promote from within?
28. Colorado Rockies (–)
- Leaky bullpen gives up three leads to vaunted Rays.
29. Kansas City Royals (–)
- On pace to lose 112 games, easily the worst in franchise history.
30. Oakland Athletics (–)
- The record: 38-93. The run differential: -302. Number of owners with a $57 million payroll who claim they will lose $40 million this year: One.
